10 things i’ve been noticing about myself. not advice. just data.
i’ve been paying attention to my own patterns lately.
not to fix them. just to see them.
noticed a few things. wrote them down. thought i’d share.
1. the first ten minutes after waking#
the first ten minutes after waking are the honest ones.
not what i intended the night before. what i actually do — what i reach for before i’ve decided anything, the first thought i let stay instead of moving past.
that’s the default state. everything after it is aspiration.
2. the upstream trigger#
when an urge arrives — food, phone, the sharp reply — it doesn’t start where it lands.
i started looking thirty minutes upstream, and there was always something skipped. a feeling i walked past. a conversation i didn’t have. a task i moved to tomorrow. a hunger i ignored because i was busy.
the urge was the second event. i’d spent years treating it as the first one.
3. the words i edit#
the sentences i delete before saying them to someone close are a map.
not of what i’m afraid they’ll do. of what i’m afraid i am. needy. unreasonable. slow. too much.
the deleted version is usually the more accurate one.
4. the time i lose#
the hours that vanish tell me more than the hours i plan.
i look up and two have gone. whatever i was doing in them isn’t the thing i’d list on a form, and it isn’t always useful, and it doesn’t care whether i’ve scheduled it.
it’s just what runs when nothing is making me run something else.
5. the gap between deciding and doing#
there’s a gap between deciding and doing, and the small ones say more than the big ones.
decide to stand up. count. decide to make the call. count.
i didn’t judge the number. i only started noticing it. it got shorter on its own, and i still don’t have a good explanation for why.
6. the story i tell myself#
when i explain a missed workout or a bad day, i can hear which one i’m doing.
describing what happened, or building a case.
the case has a defendant. the description doesn’t.
7. compliments that land and ones that bounce#
some compliments land and some slide straight off.
when someone says i’m funny, it reaches me. when someone says i’m smart, it goes past — not because they’re wrong, but because it’s aimed at a part of me that’s gone quiet.
the ones that don’t land aren’t false. they’re just addressed to someone i’ve stopped being sure about.
8. who i become in different rooms#
i’m a different person in different rooms.
the version that takes no effort and the version that performs well are not the same version.
i can tell which one is running by whether i check a sentence before it leaves.
9. the “why do i exist” drop#
the drop always feels sudden.
i started writing one line about whatever came immediately before it. not the philosophical answer — the factual one. opened instagram. alone since morning. saw someone’s announcement.
a month of those is a dataset.
it turns out the spiral keeps a schedule.
10. what i envy#
envy is uncomfortable and accurate.
not the kind that wants someone to lose what they have. the quieter pull toward the thing itself.
i write it down now. it keeps pointing in the same direction, which is either useful or irritating depending on the day.
closing#
that’s the list so far.
i haven’t fixed any of it. that wasn’t what this was for — i wanted to see whether i could look at myself the way i’d look at a system i was auditing. observe first. don’t reach for the patch.
the looking seems to do something on its own. i don’t have a mechanism for that.
just the observation.
